Michael Spiller is an American director and cinematographer.

Michael Spiller is an American director and cinematographer.

Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Spiller followed a lifelong love of movies and television to SUNY Purchase where he received a BFA in film. Working his way up the ranks in NYC after graduation eventually led to a successful career as a director of photography shooting features, TV, documentaries, commercials, and music videos all over the globe. He was a regular director on the HBO series Sex and the City, where he also served as director of photography during the first four seasons. After Sex and the City, Spiller continued to direct some of the most successful shows on TV. His credits include more than 20 episodes each of Modern Family and Scrubs, as well as multiple episodes of Superstore, Black-ish, The New Girl, The Middle, Cougar Town, The Bernie Mac Show, Big Love, Don't Trust the B in Apt 23, Better Off Ted, and Ugly Betty, and was pilot and series main director for Jake in Progress and Big Day. He served as executive producer and director for all six seasons of The Mindy Project.

In 2011, Michael Spiller won both an Emmy Award and a Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award for his work as a director on Modern Family, and he was nominated for a DGA Award again in 2012.
