About the Event

A Public Program of the Television Academy Foundation:

The Power of TV: Flipping the Script on Work, Family & Care

On television, caregiving for children and older, disabled loved ones is rarely part of the story. When it is, many depictions still reinforce traditional gender roles as well as stereotypes about age, illness, and ability. Mainstream storytelling often relies on individualistic "bootstraps" narratives in which the protagonist must go it alone in managing work, family, and care -- and "heroes" prevail through individual grit.

Developed in partnership with Caring Across Generations and New America's Better Life Lab, this event will flip the script on these conventional narratives. Drawing from audience research and real-world data, this panel will shine a light on what's missing from the lives of characters we see on screen, why that matters, and what storytellers can do to help move us all beyond the status quo.

For those interested in diving deeper into the topic, a limited number of slots are available to join a one-hour breakout session with our experts and people with lived caregiving experience following the panel.
