Kirk Browning

Kirk Browning

Date of Passing: February 10, 2008

We remember Kirk Browning at work: "...and disoollvve..." The shot would be climactic, or full of tension. It would set up an expectation that flowed from the music. Then would come the payoff: the next shot that seemed to arise organically, naturally; and the path from one shot to the next was illuminated by that gentle, soothing voice, caressing the transition: "...and disoollvve..."; and sometimes we would all join in, six or eight people in the TV truck, all crooning along with our Maestro: "...and disoollvve..." To us he was our touchstone, our benchmark.

To us he was our touchstone, our benchmark. He was the way we measured ourselves. Everything we do from now on will bear his imprint. He showed us the way for more than 30 years, and now we have to mark a path without him, but the path ahead would not exist without the path behind. We were his "darlings", and the touch of his hand on our shoulders told us of his faith in us. With his gentle voice he moved us to the creation of beauty. The sounds and sights of the great performers of the age were somehow magnified by his craft and dedication. Now his next great transition is ready, and we hear him as we call the next shot: "...and disoollvve... Great job, Kirk. Rest well."
