Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Announces New Emmy Award for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking

North Hollywood, CA, May 2, 2005 – The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is accepting entries for a new juried award for Exceptional Merit in Nonfiction Filmmaking, it was announced today by Shari Cookson and Susan Lacy, Governors of the Television Academy's Nonfiction Programming Peer Group.

“Candidates for nomination will be selected from the entries that demonstrate profound social impact, significant innovation of form and/or remarkable mastery of filmmaking technique perpetuates the power of the art form,” Cookson said.

“We have set the bar extremely high in creating this award. The intent is to honor films that elevate the art of nonfiction filmmaking,” Lacy said.

Informational or journalistically-oriented programs are not eligible to compete nor is reality programming. The intent of the award is to honor primetime nonfiction films.

“Specifically these are programs that unfold with a filmic expression of subject-matter and represent the highest degree of achievement in cinematic craft appropriate to the genre,” Cookson said.

“We created this award to better represent a vital sector of our membership by celebrating their art as it exists within Primetime landscape,” Lacy said.

The deadline for submission is May 13, 2005. Nonfiction specials and episodes of nonfiction series are eligible. To qualify, the program must have aired between June 1, 2004 and May 31, 2005.Producers who have already entered programs in the regular nonfiction categories because they did not know about the new area may switch them to the new area.

The jury will be comprised of qualified nonfiction professionals. Up to five nominations, announced July 14, will be selected from the candidates. One or no Emmy will be awarded at the 2005 Creative Arts Awards on Sunday, September 11, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. This is not a must-give category.
