Awards Season in Full Swing

The Producers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild bestow awards on a January weekend.

The awards season is upon us, and the Producers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild revealed their choices January 24 and 25.

Netflix series Orange Is The New Black took home awards from both the Producers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild.

The PGA awards, held on January 24, honored the producers of Orange Is The New Black for best episodic comedy, with Breaking Bad taking the award for best episodic drama, and Fargo for best long form program.

Other awards in television catagories went to Cosmos for non fiction program, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in the talk show category, and The Voice for competition program. HBO’s The Normal Heart took the Stanley Kramer Award, given for raising social awareness.

Mark Gordon, producer of such series as Criminal Minds, Gray’s Anatomy and Ray Donovan, received the Norman Lear Achievement Award.

Film winners included: Birdman and The Lego Movie.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards, held on January 25, also honored Orange Is The New Black as the best ensemble cast performance in a comedy, and OITNB cast member Uzo Aduba (pictured above) as best actress in a comedy.

Other award winners were: Downton Abbey for best ensemble cast, Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) for best actor in a drama, Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) for best actress in a drama and William H. Macy (Shameless) for best actor in a comedy.

In the categories for television movie or miniseries, Mark Ruffalo won as best actor for The Normal Heart, and Frances McDormand was honored for Olive Kitteridge.

The stunt ensemble award went to Game of Thrones.

In the film categories, the winners were: lead actor Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything), lead actress Julianne Moore (Still Alice), supporting actor J.K. Simmons (Whiplash), supporting actress Patricia Arquette (Boyhood), and the cast of Birdman as best ensemble.
