Social Buzz: Top Fall TV Shows, December 7 - 13, 2014

From new shows to new seasons, what were we watching and talking about this week?

Television Academy & Unified

In just 15 short days, confetti will fly, champagne glasses will clink, and old resolutions will be resurrected. That’s right, we’re talking about New Year’s — when people really start to think about notable endings and big beginnings. Hollywood, of course, never stops thinking about which shows to return or retire, which is why this week we cast the social spotlight on some interesting series finales and premieres. The famed finales on our list include Key & Peele, Supernatural, Sons of Anarchy, and the promising premieres are The Librarians, Marco Polo, and Mike & Molly. We also added some Pretty Little Liars for extra measure. We wanted to know:

  • Did the latest Netflix series Marco Polo discover a brand new audience on social?
  • Were fans eating up Mike and Molly’s hilarious romance on Facebook and Twitter?
  • Did Mad TV veterans Key & Peele keep fans laughing all the way to Facebook with their hilariously audacious comedy sketches?
  • Were fans reading and writing about The Librarians' first solo mission?
  • Was fan engagement for Supernatural out of this world for its mid-season finale?
  • Brotherhood. Loyalty. Family. Forever. — Did fans stay true to Sons of Anarchy’s final ride and series finale?
  • Are the adventures of Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily in the fifth season of mystery-thriller Pretty Little Liars keeping fans glued to their seats on social?

The Social Totals

Pretty Little Liars got an “A” on social, surpassing the rest of the competition with their total number of engagements, most likely due to their significant following on both Facebook and Twitter.

Active Audiences

Even if a show has the largest number of social engagements, it doesn’t necessarily translate to the most actively engaged audience. Therefore, in addition to examining the total number of social engagements, we also looked at engagements per 1K users. Fans were clearly excited for the premiere of TNT’s The Librarians, whose brainy and brilliant team filed the rest of the competition under History. The show led with 745.6 Facebook engagements per 1K users and 793.9 Twitter engagements per 1K followers.
