Entry Rules & Eligibility

As with all the information on this page, read carefully:
  1. Applicants must be enrolled in a college or university during the eligibility period: Jan. 1, 2007 through Dec. 31, 2007. All pieces submitted must be produced for school related classes, groups, or projects and as such, must be verified by a Faculty Member. No Exceptions.

  2. Only the student producer(s) of record may enter and must be listed as such on the credit list.  In the case of Music Composition, the producer can enter on behalf of the composer, or the composer can enter on his or her own behalf. The composer will be awarded the prize. (See more Music guidelines in item #12 below.)

  3. Faculty may act in an advisory capacity only.

  4. Applicants must print and fill out the Faculty form which includes instructor's name, signature, school address, phone number and email address and fax to: Debbie Slavkin at 818-761-2827.

  5. Pieces in the following categories may not exceed one hour:  Comedy, Comedy Series, Drama, Drama Series, and Documentary.

  6. The following pieces my not exceed 30 minutes:  Animation, Music, Children’s, Newscast, and Magazine.

  7. Commercials category: Commercial entries may not exceed one-minute in length, and must advertise a product or service. PSAs will not be accepted.

  12. Music category clarifications:

    • Music (best composition): For entries in the "Best Composition" area of the Music category, all composers must be students. All music compositions must be original compositions and original arrangements. Composers will win the award in this area, and may submit entries on their own.

    • Music (best use of music): For entries in the "Best Use" area of the Music category, composers do not have to be students. Entries in this area may consist of segments of pieces or entire works where the producer feels the creative use of music is exceptionally effective. Music videos, as well, should be entered in this category. Producer (not the composer) will win the award in this area.

    • All submitted original compositions must have been composed for an actual video/digital/film piece. Students can not submit JUST the music. Submissions entered in this category with no visuals will be disqualified.

    • With the exception of music video, all other types of entries in Music categories may also be submitted for judging in whatever other one category applies.

Incomplete entries will not be accepted.

About Judging, Winners Selection and Accommodations

Entries will be judged by category online on a secure server, where viewing is restricted to competition judges and staff only—not made available for viewing by the general public.

Finalists in each category will proceed to Blue Ribbon Panels for selection of winners in each category. Blue Ribbon panels will be judged at the Television Academy offices.

Only one student producer of record for First, Second and Third Place winning entries will be brought to Los Angeles at Television Academy Foundation expense for the black-tie Awards Gala and Screenings in March 2008. (Some categories will have only one award.) All other winning producers are invited to attend and will receive a trophy or plaque, but will be responsible for their own expenses.

Honorable Mention certificate winners may be awarded in any category at the judges’ discretion.  No financial award is made.  Such Honorable Mention winners will be recognized at the gala and will be invited to attend, but will be responsible for their own expenses.
