William E. Mayher III was a neurosurgeon who became a broadcasting executive, most notably as chairman of the board Gray Television.

Mayher graduated from the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia, was a prominent neurosurgeon in Albany from 1970 to 1998.

Mayher graduated from the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia, was a prominent neurosurgeon in Albany from 1970 to 1998.

In addition to his medical career, Mayher served on various boards. He was chairman of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia; chairman of the Medical College of Georgia Foundation Board; and chairman of the Albany Regional Airport Commission. Other boards on which he served included the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame Board. .

In 1993 he became chairman of the board of Gray Television, Inc. During his tenure, Gray transformed from a small newspaper publisher and broadcaster into one of the largest television groups in the U.S.

Mayher died January 31, 2016, in Athens, Georgia.  He was 77.
