Brock Yates

Brock Yates was a writer best known for penning the screenplay for the 1981 film The Cannonball Run, an action comedy about a group of competitors who race their cars across the United States. The movie starred Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore and Farrah Fawcett.

Yates also wrote the films The Last Race and Smokey and the Bandit II, starring Reynolds, Sally Field and Jackie Gleason.  

Additionally, Yates penned the pilot for Stockers, about two stock car racers. The show aired as a special after it failed to go to series. He also wrote the television movie Two of a Kind (for which he also served as a producer), Bandit: Bandit Bandit and the TV documentary The Time Machines.

Yates was originally an automotive journalist who founded an actual cross-country road race in the 1970s, before fictionalizing it for the big screen.

He died October 5, 2016. He was 82.
