Bernard Fox

Bernard Fox was a Welsh actor who was best known to television audiences for roles on the popular television comedies Bewitched and Hogan's Heroes.

Fox began his entertainment career at the age of 18 months, and by the age of 14 he was an assistant manager of a theater. After serving in the Royal Navy during World War II, he resumed his career and went on to appear in some 30 films from 1956 to 2004. They included two productions about the sinking of RMS Titanic — the 1958 release A Night to Remember, in which he played a sailor who delivered the line "Iceberg dead ahead, sir!" from the ship's crow's nest, and the 1997 Oscar winner Titanic, in which he played Colonel Archibald Gracie IV. His other film roles ranged from supporting parts in broad comedies (Yellowbeard, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo and The Private Eyes) to supplying the voice of the Chairmouse in the Disney animated features The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under. He also played the role of Winston Havelock, a retired Air Force pilot, in the 1999 adventure film The Mummy. His final film appearance came in 2004, in Surge of Power: The Stuff of Heroes.

But he made his most enduring impact in television — most notably as the warlock physician Dr. Bombay on Bewitched and as the inept "Colonel" Crittendon (actually an RAF Group Captain, though always referred to as a Colonel) on Hogan's Heroes. Ironically, prior to being cast as Dr. Bombay, he appeared on Bewitched as a professional witch debunker. He repeated the role of Dr. Bombay on the 1977 Bewitched spinoff Tabitha, and again in 1999, on the soap opera Passions. He also spoofed the role as a genie doctor ("wish doctor") in a 1989 episode of Pee-wee's Playhouse.

In addition, he appeared in episodes of The Dick Van Dyke Show, F Troop, The Andy Griffith Show, Perry Mason, McHale's Navy, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., M*A*S*H, Knight Rider, Murder, She Wrote and Dharma and Greg.
