Writer-producer Daniel H. Birman is producing a one-hour special for National Geographic Channel that considers new theories about our Universe. Recently Birman completed Europa: Mystery of the Ice Moon, a one-hour special for the Science Channel, and prior to that, Medical Maverick—two one-hour shows for Discovery Health Channel. He is producing She’s Screaming: Nobody’s Listening, a documentary feature about the psychological complexity affecting a sixteen-year-old girl who committed murder. Birman produced the four-part program The Team, the first-ever nonfiction series for Nickelodeon and the Tom Lynch Company; the Discovery Health series Alternatives: Uncovered; and Chopper Rescue, a pilot for Discovery Health. Formerly a producer for acclaimed Lifetime Medical Television, Birman also worked at Brookfield Productions on the NBC special The Day My Kid Went Punk and the ABC After School Special The Donna Cheek Story, among other productions. While earning his M.A. in Journalism at USC, Birman directed and shot a documentary about famed radio personality Norman Corwin, and shot The Children of Skid Row in Los Angeles—both of which aired on PBS. Birman, who now teaches at USC’s Annenberg School for Communication, is a frequent speaker and panelist on the subject of nonfiction writing and producing, and in 1998 the Shanghai Television Festival invited him as one of five jury members to judge international documentaries. For the Television Academy he has served as secretary, chaired the Ethics Committee and is an active member of the Primetime Awards and Education committees.
