Producer, writer and director John Wells has been responsible for the running of two of television’s most heralded programs: ER and The West Wing. ER has earned 120 Primetime Emmy nominations — the most in series history — including 22 wins. The West Wing garnered 95 Primetime Emmy nominations and 27 wins, including four for Outstanding Drama Series. Wells and his team of producers have received multiple Peabody Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Producers’ Guild Awards, Humanitas Prizes and Golden Globes, as well as the Television Critics’ Association Heritage Award. Wells also received the 2005 David Susskind Achievement Award in Television from the Producers Guild of America. Previously, Wells was a writer-producer on Third Watch and Smith, and a director and writer on China Beach. John Wells Productions has also produced feature films, including The Good Thief, White Oleander and Duma. Wells also funds the independent company Killer Films, and he has executive produced such Killer Films releases as Far From Heaven, One Hour Photo and I’m Not There. His stage work includes productions of Judgement, Balm in Gilead, Battery and She Also Dances. A former president of the Writers Guild of America, Wells holds a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University and an M.F.A. from the University of Southern California.
